First responders have some of the most stressful jobs in our society. Police officers and fire fighters are asked to put their lives on the line on a daily basis. Likewise, dispatchers and EMS are exposed to the most horible and traumatic situations imaginable. In addition to managing the physical and emotional risks of the job, first responders must also deal with personal, legal, organizational and political stress. These responsibilities can be quite stressful for the individual and their families. Staff members at Solid Ground Counseling are specificly trained to address issues impacting first responders and their families. Services available include critical incident stress debriefing, individual counseling, couples counseling, family counseling, and group counseling. Non-treatment services include psychological and personality assessment, pre-employment evaluation, in-service training, and professional consultation.
Stress in these areas may result in: marital or family problems, political or legal trouble, problems with command staff, addictions, mood related problems like anxiety or depression, and trauma related stress from critical incidents. Solid Ground Counseling is able to provide confidential services by a therapist who is experienced in working with first responders. These services include: critical incident stress debriefing, group therapy, individual counseling, marital & family counseling, and testing.

Premarital counseling is designed to help couples become more aware of what marriage is and what it takes to succeed in it. It provides couples with the right tools to grow and build a strong marriage. Couples will focus on topics such as communication skills, role expectations, conflict resolution skills, spiritual beliefs, sexuality, financial stability, and family of origin issues. Premarital counseling will help couples develop personal, couple and family goals. Solid Ground Counseling uses materials from many different sources in designing a premarital course that is customized for each couple.
Solid Ground Counseling is able to provide testing to assess various areas of mental health. These areas include personality, mood, substance use/abuse, achievement, and intelligence. Tests are recommended based on the specific needs of the client, which may include a single test or a battery of tests. The results of the tests are never used as sole diagnostic evidence. Instead, they are used in conjunction with the client’s personal history and the clinician’s professional assessment.

Our Anger Management Program is based on the one developed by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. We use their workbook along with our own uniquely tailored material to give you a healthier alternative to managing your anger. Participants who successfully complete our program learn the difference between anger, aggression and hostility, learn to recognize triggering events and cues, how to employ healthy coping skills and much more.
Anxiety is a feeling that many people experience when dealing with stressful or threatening situations. Anxiety is often called “stress.” Some anxiety is normal. Anxiety helps us at times to deal with difficult situations because fear and anxiety alert us to danger. These responses are the result of the body and mind telling us that something is wrong. Our anxiety may tell us that we need to get out of a certain situation or make some changes in our lives. An anxiety disorder, however is associated with more intense feelings of nervousness, and reactions to this nervousness.

Grief and loss is much broader than the loss of a loved one. Grief and loss can be in the form of losing a job, moving to a new state, changing schools, losing a part of your body, medical issues and much, much more. Often times, during our grieving, we push people away from us and say, “I can do this on my own”. That is the farthest statement from the truth. Trying to grieve alone is not the best way to heal and walk through your loss. Usually when we try to do it that way, we stuff the grief and it comes out in other forms, sometimes years later. Walking through the different stages of grief with Solid Ground Counseling will help you heal faster and effectively. You will be back functioning in your life quicker than you thought.
Life adjustments can come at us in all different shapes and sizes. As you walk through these life adjustments, often times having someone there to listen and offer advice helps tremendously. Some of the life adjustments we see on a weekly basis are: divorce, blended families, job loss, loss of a loved one, financial stress, home loss, and physical health issues.
Whether you're preparing for a life together, are newly married, or are a seasoned couple, intimate relationships at every stage can be complicated and difficult to navigate. Encountering repetitive cycles of interpersonal conflict can feel defeating and discouraging. Inviting an unbiased professional into your relationship can create a safe space to explore areas for growth and improvement so that you can implement strategies and techniques to improve the quality of your relationship.
When we become parents, that little baby doesn’t come home from the hospital with a manual, and that means we probably have many questions from day one. What do we use to help raise our sons and daughters? Love and Logic? Step Parenting? Growing Children God’s Way? The Bible? The Right to be Grown Up? Our parents? With so many tools and options to choose from, how do we know where to start? At Solid Ground Counseling, the first questions we ask parents are, “where did you learn your parenting skills?” and “did they work?” If the answer is anything less than a confident, loving, proven source that is able to grow and adapt to any home or life stage, then you will need some help along the way. Our trained therapists will help answer the many questions parents have that come along with raising children at all stages of their lives.
No other addiction affects your most personal feelings as profoundly as sex addiction. Because of the intense conflicts that accompany it, sexual addiction is also one of the most complex addictions. Sexuality should be an integral and balanced part of our life experience. However, when sex becomes all consuming, or when we deprive ourselves of healthy sexual expression, our sexuality acts as a barrier filled with shame and self-contempt.
